Train your tamer
Khal Draco's Taming Guide
Learn the route. Then build your pet team.
Training stages are below. The team builder helps choose followers and Bestiary upgrades for solo farming at your skill level.
Getting started
The path of an animal tamer is a long, oft times frustrating one, but with the ability to control creatures, becoming an animal tamer is a lucrative profession if given the time and patience it needs to be raised and mastered.
- Read the FAQ and the Animal Taming page for a basic understanding of taming on Outlands.
- Set up the AutoTame Razor script.
- Choose a character template that fits your style of play in the Character Builder. Veterinary is required to use the script.
- Prepare your template in game. 50 Magery is recommended while training, for recalling.
- Choose the creature for your skill range below and check its bestiary location. The old Lower Prevalia runetome is no longer available.
Before you begin
- Raise Animal Taming and Animal Lore together. Both must meet the creature's minimum to command it.
- You must stand within 3 tiles of the creature to begin taming it, and within 6 tiles to continue taming.
- You do not need to feed pets to keep their loyalty up. They are self-sufficient.
- Taming skill gain cannot occur while standing inside a house. Creatures can still be tamed there.
- Tamed creatures that are teleported (recall, gate, moongate) default to follow mode.
The route, 50 to 120
One creature for each skill range, with an alternative where there is a good one. Taming numbers, control slots and class are read from the site's bestiary snapshot. These training stages also appear on the Animal Taming page; a stage is a suggested training range, not a promise of a gain on every attempt.
Rules snapshot checked Oct 30, 2026. Read the training rules. The original runetome is unavailable; the archived pictures below are for reference.

Passive gains
- When you kill a creature, each of your tamed followers whose Min Taming is within 10 points of your printed Animal Taming skill helps you earn a Passive Skill Check for Animal Taming, Animal Lore and Herding.
- Chance per kill = Gold Value earned × Taming Skill Scalar × (valid follower control slots ÷ 5) ÷ 1000. The scalar starts at 10.0 up to 50 skill and falls to 1.3 at 115 to 120.
- Passive checks have a 15 second cooldown, and gain at 2x (Taming), 4x (Lore) and 10x (Herding) the normal chance.
That fits the route well: the creature you just tamed at each step sits within 10 points of your skill, so keep a full 5 slots of route pets and hunt high gold-value creatures between taming sessions. Full rules on the Animal Taming page.
Rune Library archive
The Lower Prevalia taming runetome is no longer available.
Khal Draco's original directions and screenshots are kept here as part of the guide's history. Do not rely on this address for a current training route. No replacement location has been confirmed.
Khal Draco's Rune Library was part of the original Tame Outlands route. Khal described it as an establishment “for the community”, where PKs, thieves and griefers were not welcome.
- Historical address
- 1992 Khal Draco Way, Lower Prevalia
- Historical location
- South of Lower Prevalia
- Coordinates
- 1988, 1789
- Hiking waypoint
- Sacrificial Cliffs
- Treasure map zone
- Zone 22

The Taming Holy Grail
The original runetome held a rune for each stop on the route. It used Magery or recall scrolls, and the guide directed visitors to a nearby vendor for charges. This describes the former setup, rather than an available travel service.

The AutoTame Razor script
Prerequisites from the original guide: a tamer template with Veterinary and a tank pet. Magery helps with travel. A level ten Scarab was Khal's original tank recommendation; choose a follower you can command at your current Taming and Lore.
Setting up the script
- Open the script page above and copy the whole script.
- Launch the UO Outlands Classic Client and log in.
- In Razor, open the Scripts tab and click New.
- Name your script in the pop-up box and click OK.
- Click inside the script text field, paste the script (Ctrl+V) and click Save.
- Open the Options tab, click Add, then select your tank pet in game.
- In the pop-up box, type tank and click OK.
Always read the author notes inside the script before running it. Script written by Zell (Script Wizard); setup steps by Hannah Humble.
Frequently asked questions
What are passive taming skill gains?
Which taming attempts can give skill gains?
The current Animal Taming rules say attempts can give gains when the success chance is less than 100%. A creature that has already been tamed can still give gains, with a 75% penalty. You cannot gain while standing inside a house.
The original guide's per-creature gain caps are not documented on the imported rules page, so they are not used to promise a fixed number of gains here. See the source rules.
Do I need to feed my pets on UO Outlands?
No, feeding pets on Outlands is not necessary.
What is a bonded pet, and how do I bond one?
A bonded pet turns into a ghost when it dies. Bandage resurrection requires 80 Veterinary and 80 Animal Lore; the rules also list the Resurrection spell and NPC healers.
- Pets bond after reaching level 1. Pack animals cannot be bonded.
- All pets start at level 0 and level up by killing creatures with them.
- Pets recall, hike, teleport, rope and gate with their owner.
- Stable pets when leaving them behind. The current abandonment notes say to return within speech distance at least once every 24 hours.
